Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium L-aspartate is a chelated calcium salt of the amino acid L-aspartic acid, primarily utilized as a highly bioavailable calcium supplement. Unlike inorganic calcium salts such as calcium carbonate, calcium L-aspartate is absorbed more efficiently in the gastrointestinal tract, a process facilitated by the upregulation of calcium transport channels including **TRPV5** and **TRPV6**. Clinically, it is employed in the management and prevention of calcium deficiency-related conditions, such as **osteoporosis** and **osteomalacia**, often in combination with vitamin D analogs. Research has also demonstrated its potential in reducing vascular sensitivity to angiotensin II in pregnant women, suggesting a role in preventing **pregnancy-induced hypertension**. Beyond its therapeutic applications, it has been investigated for environmental and industrial uses, including enhancing plant tolerance to heavy metal toxicity and inhibiting microbial corrosion of carbon steel.
