Calcium butyrate + magnesium butyrate is a combination of the calcium and magnesium salts of butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced in the human colon by the bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber. As a supplement, this combination is used to provide a stable, buffered form of butyrate to the gastrointestinal tract, bypassing the issues of odor and rapid absorption associated with pure butyric acid. Butyrate serves as the primary energy source for colonocytes and is a critical signaling molecule for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and immune homeostasis. Its primary mechanisms of action include the inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs), which leads to the hyperacetylation of histones and the modulation of gene expression related to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and the activation of G-protein coupled receptors (such as GPR41, GPR43, and GPR109A). It is frequently used in the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and various functional gastrointestinal disorders.
