It combines electrolytes with dextrose to provide water, sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, lactate, and carbohydrate calories for parenteral replacement of extracellular fluid and electrolyte losses, restoration of blood glucose, and alkalinization via hepatic metabolism of lactate to bicarbonate. The product is used in adults and pediatric patients as a source of water, electrolytes, and calories or as an alkalinizing agent, and has been manufactured/marketed by Hospira and ICU Medical.
