calcium citrate

Calcium citrate is the calcium salt of citric acid and is commonly used as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels. It is also used as a food additive and preservative. As a supplement or medication taken orally (by mouth), it increases plasma calcium levels by providing bioavailable elemental calcium. This action reduces secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) via stimulation of the G-protein coupled calcium-sensing receptor on parathyroid cells. Lower PTH decreases bone resorption and increases bone mineral density by promoting deposition of more calcium into bone tissue[3][9]. Calcium plays essential roles in nerve conduction, muscle contraction (including cardiac muscle function), blood clotting processes and maintaining strong bones[7]. The drug may be indicated for conditions such as osteoporosis prevention/treatment and other states associated with hypocalcemia including osteomalacia/rickets or hypoparathyroidism[7].
