Calcium citrate + fluoride is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated for the prevention of dental caries. The intervention involves the sequential administration of a chewable calcium citrate supplement followed by a fluoride mouthwash. The mechanism of action is based on the hypothesis that increasing the concentration of calcium ions in the oral cavity enhances the retention of fluoride in oral fluids, such as saliva and dental biofilm. This increased fluoride retention promotes the remineralization of tooth enamel and inhibits demineralization, thereby potentially boosting the anticaries efficacy of standard fluoride treatments. This research is primarily led by the University of Michigan and has been evaluated in clinical studies (e.g., NCT04620252) to assess salivary fluoride retention in healthy volunteers.
