Overview

The calcium-containing replacement solution is a specialized electrolyte formulation developed by the Nephrology Department at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, for use in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). It is specifically designed to facilitate regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) by incorporating calcium directly into the replacement fluid. In traditional RCA protocols, calcium is typically omitted from the replacement fluid and infused separately to prevent clotting within the extracorporeal circuit while maintaining systemic calcium levels. This modified solution simplifies the CRRT procedure by eliminating the need for a separate calcium infusion pump, thereby reducing the complexity of the circuit and the risk of dosing errors. It is primarily indicated for patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who require extracorporeal blood purification with citrate anticoagulation.
