Calcium Enriched Mixture (CEM) cement is a water-based, tooth-colored endodontic biomaterial. It functions by releasing calcium and phosphate ions, which promotes the formation of hydroxyapatite and induces a dentinal bridge. The cement is alkaline (pH > 10.5) and releases calcium hydroxide, contributing to its therapeutic effects. It is noted for its superior antibacterial properties, shorter setting and working times, lower film thickness, and improved handling compared to other dental materials like MTA. CEM cement is primarily used in vital pulp therapy for the management of irreversible pulpitis in human permanent teeth.
