Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is a chemical compound that occurs naturally as the mineral fluorspar. In dentistry, it is widely utilized for its role in preventing and treating various oral conditions such as dental caries, white spot lesions, dental fluorosis, and dentin hypersensitivity. It functions by forming a fluoride reservoir on tooth surfaces, which slowly releases fluoride ions. These ions are crucial for promoting the remineralization of tooth enamel and dentin, thereby increasing their resistance to acid attacks and demineralization. When in nanoparticle form, calcium fluoride also exhibits antibacterial properties against oral pathogens like Streptococcus mutans. Beyond its biomedical applications, calcium fluoride is a significant material in optics, valued for its broad transmission range from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths, low refractive index, and low chromatic dispersion, making it an essential component for high-performance lenses, windows, and other optical devices.
