Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium gluconate is a mineral supplement and medication used to treat or prevent calcium deficiencies, including hypocalcemia, osteoporosis, rickets, and conditions such as hypocalcemic tetany. It is also indicated for acute symptomatic hypocalcemia in both adults and children. As an intravenous medication, it is used to manage cardiac arrest or cardiotoxicity due to hyperkalemia or hypermagnesemia and as an antidote for magnesium sulfate overdose. It can be administered orally or intravenously but not intramuscularly due to risk of tissue necrosis. The mechanism of action involves providing bioavailable calcium ions essential for bone formation, neuromuscular function, blood coagulation, and cardiac contractility[1][2][4][5][7][8].
