Calcium gluconate + magnesium sulfate is a combination of two mineral salts used in clinical practice, primarily for their roles in electrolyte balance and as antidotes to each other's toxicity. Calcium gluconate is a calcium salt used to treat or prevent hypocalcemia, manage cardiac arrest, and counteract the cardiotoxic effects of hyperkalemia or hypermagnesemia. It acts as an antidote for magnesium sulfate toxicity by restoring normal neuromuscular function[1][2][5]. Magnesium sulfate is used to treat convulsions during pregnancy (eclampsia), nephritis in children, magnesium deficiency, and tetany. It works by inhibiting action potentials in myometrial muscle cells, reducing the frequency and force of contractions[8]. The combination may be encountered clinically when managing pre-eclampsia/eclampsia or correcting severe electrolyte imbalances.
