Calcium gluconate + neostigmine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used to accelerate the recovery from neuromuscular blockade, particularly after surgery. Neostigmine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that increases acetylcholine levels at the neuromuscular junction, thereby reversing non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade. Calcium gluconate, when co-administered with neostigmine, has been shown to further enhance and speed up this reversal process by increasing extracellular calcium concentration, which facilitates neurotransmitter release and muscle contraction. This combination has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the time required for neuromuscular recovery and extubation in pediatric patients following anesthesia[1].
