Calcium hyaluronate is the calcium salt of hyaluronic acid (HA), a high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan and a fundamental component of the extracellular matrix in connective tissues. While sodium hyaluronate is the more prevalent pharmaceutical form for viscosupplementation, the calcium salt is utilized for its specific structural and biocompatible properties in nutraceuticals, topical cosmetics, and specialized medical applications such as bone regeneration and wound care. Mechanistically, it acts as both a mechanical lubricant and a bioactive ligand, binding to cell surface receptors like CD44 and the hyaluronan-mediated motility receptor (RHAMM). These interactions modulate signaling pathways involved in cell migration, proliferation, and the inflammatory response. In clinical contexts, it is used to support joint health by restoring the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid and is investigated for its ability to provide a scaffold for tissue repair and bone grafting.
