Overview

**Calcium hydroxide** is an inorganic, strongly alkaline compound used primarily in dentistry as an intracanal medicament and in procedures including pulp capping, apexification, and regenerative endodontic treatment. In aqueous environments it dissociates to calcium and hydroxyl ions; the resulting high pH produces nonspecific antimicrobial effects, including disruption of bacterial cellular functions, and supports mineralized-tissue repair in dental applications. It has broad activity against many endodontic microorganisms, although activity can be limited against organisms such as *Enterococcus faecalis* and *Candida albicans*.
