Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium hydroxide nanoparticles (Ca(OH)2 NPs) are a nano-scale formulation of calcium hydroxide characterized by high alkalinity, biocompatibility, and a high surface-area-to-volume ratio. These properties allow for enhanced penetration and reactivity compared to conventional bulk calcium hydroxide. In endodontics, they are utilized as intracanal medicaments due to their potent antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity against pathogens such as *Enterococcus faecalis*. In oncology, Ca(OH)2 NPs have demonstrated selective cytotoxicity against pancreatic and hepatic cancer cells by inducing excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, which leads to genomic DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the activation of p53-mediated apoptotic pathways. Additionally, they are investigated for their ability to promote osseointegration in orthopedic implants and to modulate immune responses by activating dendritic cells via cytosolic calcium signaling pathways (NFAT and NF-κB).
