Calcium hydroxy methionine is a hydroxy-analogue of the essential amino acid methionine, specifically the calcium salt of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyric acid. It is primarily investigated for its therapeutic potential in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), notably through research conducted at CHU Gabriel-Montpied. In the body, this compound serves a dual purpose: it acts as a calcium-based phosphate binder in the gastrointestinal tract to manage hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, and it functions as a nitrogen-free precursor to methionine. Through transamination, the hydroxy-analogue is converted into methionine by utilizing excess nitrogen, thereby helping to reduce urea production and alleviate uremic symptoms in CKD patients.
