**Calcium hydroxycitrate** is the calcium salt form of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a naturally occurring compound widely found in the rind of the Garcinia cambogia fruit and related Garcinia species. As a supplement, calcium hydroxycitrate has been studied for its potential in aiding weight loss, increasing satiety, and reducing the formation of kidney stones, particularly calcium oxalate stones. Mechanistically, hydroxycitrate acts mainly by inhibiting ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, and by complexing with calcium to inhibit crystal growth and aggregation. Preliminary in vitro and animal studies suggest effects against certain cancer cell lines and potential synergy with alpha lipoic acid in cancer therapy. There are reports of rare but potentially severe hepatotoxicity, especially when combined with other Garcinia-derived ingredients or supplements. Calcium hydroxycitrate is popular as a dietary supplement and not as a registered pharmaceutical product[1][3][4][5][6][7].
