Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium oxybate is one component of a fixed-combination medication formulated as calcium oxybate, magnesium oxybate, potassium oxybate, and sodium oxybate (brand name Xywav). This oral solution is approved to treat **cataplexy** and **excessive daytime sleepiness** in patients with narcolepsy (age 7 and older) and idiopathic hypersomnia in adults. As a central nervous system depressant, it primarily acts as a lower-sodium alternative to sodium oxybate, aimed at reducing cardiovascular risk related to sodium load. Its mechanism is believed to involve action as an agonist at the **gamma-aminobutyric acid type B (GABA-B) receptor**, modulating sleep-wake regulation, particularly at noradrenergic, dopaminergic, and thalamocortical neurons.
