Overview

Calcium sodium phosphosilicate is an inorganic, particulate **bioactive glass** used primarily in topical oral-care products for dentin hypersensitivity and enamel remineralization. Commonly marketed as NovaMin, the material reacts with saliva or water through ion exchange, releasing sodium, calcium, and phosphate ions and increasing local pH. This promotes deposition of a hydroxyapatite-like mineral layer on exposed dentin and enamel and physically occludes open dentinal tubules, reducing stimulus-induced fluid movement and associated sensitivity. It has been studied in dentifrices, prophylaxis pastes, powders, and dissolvable delivery systems, including clinical studies of dentin hypersensitivity, bleaching-associated tooth sensitivity, enamel demineralization, and molar-incisor hypomineralization.
