Calcium threonate is a small molecule and a calcium salt of threnoic acid developed as both a novel drug for the treatment of osteoporosis and as a dietary supplement to address calcium deficiency. The most common form is calcium L-threonate ((2R,3S)-2,3,4-trihydroxy butyric acid calcium). It acts by dissociating into calcium and L-threonic acid; the latter is an active metabolite of vitamin C that stimulates vitamin C uptake in cells. This action may enhance osteoblast formation and collagen synthesis via increased vitamin C retention—processes important for bone mineralization. Human studies have demonstrated that it is absorbed after oral administration[1][2][3][5].
