Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calculus bovis + metronidazole is a small-molecule combination drug approved in China for the treatment of acute oral and dental infections. It consists of metronidazole, a synthetic nitroimidazole antibiotic, and artificial calculus bovis (Niuhuang), a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient. Metronidazole exerts its antimicrobial effect by entering bacterial cells and forming unstable intermediate metabolites that bind to DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, specifically targeting anaerobic bacteria. Artificial calculus bovis provides complementary anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and detoxifying effects, which help alleviate the pain and swelling associated with dental conditions such as wisdom tooth pericoronitis, pulpitis, and alveolar abscesses. The combination is typically formulated as oral capsules.
