Calculus Bovis Sativus (CBS) is a bioengineered traditional Chinese medicine produced in vitro from bovine bile, serving as a standardized and sustainable substitute for natural Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang). It was developed using modern bioengineering techniques to replicate the biochemical profile of the natural substance, containing key bioactive components such as cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, and bilirubin. CBS primarily functions as a Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) agonist, which plays a critical role in regulating bile acid homeostasis and lipid metabolism. Pharmacologically, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, sedative, and hepatoprotective activities. It has been included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China since 2005 and is clinically utilized for the treatment of various hepatobiliary and inflammatory conditions, including cholestasis and ulcerative colitis.
