Calf pulmonary surfactant is a natural surfactant preparation extracted from the lungs of calves, containing a complex mixture of phospholipids (primarily dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) and hydrophobic surfactant-associated proteins (SP-B and SP-C). It is used as a replacement therapy for neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) who lack sufficient endogenous surfactant. By reducing surface tension at the air-liquid interface within the alveoli, the drug prevents alveolar collapse at the end of expiration, increases lung compliance, and improves gas exchange. It is typically administered via intratracheal instillation, often using minimally invasive techniques like LISA (Minimally Invasive Surfactant Administration) or the INSURE (Intubation-Surfactant-Extubation) method.
