Drug intelligence / Profile preview
California poppy extract is a botanical preparation derived from the aerial parts or seeds of *Eschscholzia californica*, traditionally used as a gentle sedative, anxiolytic, antispasmodic, and analgesic. Its pharmacologically active constituents include isoquinoline alkaloids such as protopine, allocryptopine, and N-methyllaurotetanine, which modulate GABA-A receptor function, inhibit acetylcholinesterase, antagonize 5-HT1A receptors, and can inhibit serotonin and norepinephrine transporters in preclinical models[1]. Clinically, evidence is limited; a combination product with hawthorn and magnesium reduced anxiety symptoms versus placebo, but efficacy of California poppy alone in humans remains unproven[5]. It is marketed as a dietary supplement for sleep, anxiety, and mild pain, with potential for sedation and interactions with CNS depressants and certain cardiovascular drugs[7][9][5].
