Caligel

Caligel is a topical combination pharmaceutical product formulated as a gel for the treatment of various inflammatory skin disorders complicated by bacterial or fungal infections. It contains three active components: clobetasol propionate, a high-potency corticosteroid; neomycin sulphate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic; and miconazole nitrate, an imidazole antifungal. Clobetasol propionate works by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, thereby controlling the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Neomycin sulphate interferes with bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to the production of nonfunctional proteins and bacterial cell death. Miconazole nitrate inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, by inhibiting the enzyme lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase. This triple-action formulation is primarily indicated for conditions such as infected eczema, psoriasis, and various forms of dermatitis where secondary infection is present or suspected.
