Callistemon citrinus pollen, derived from the Lemon Bottlebrush plant, is utilized in clinical allergology as an allergen extract for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. As a diagnostic agent, it is employed in skin prick testing or intradermal testing to identify patients sensitized to Bottlebrush pollen, which is a known aeroallergen in temperate and subtropical regions. In a therapeutic context, it is used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to induce clinical and immunological tolerance. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of the immune system, specifically shifting the T-cell response from a Th2-weighted allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-weighted profile, leading to the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies and a reduction in allergen-specific IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation.
