Calvatia lilacina extract is a preparation derived from the fruiting body of the edible puffball mushroom Calvatia lilacina. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine for ailments involving bleeding and inflammation, modern research indicates the extract—particularly its protein fraction—demonstrates anti-cancer bioactivity including inhibition of proliferation and induction of apoptosis in several human cancer cell lines such as colorectal (SW480), breast, and monocytic leukemia cells. Mechanistically, the anticancer effects are mediated primarily through glutathione depletion, repression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS), induction of mitochondrial dysfunction, and to some extent increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). Selectivity studies indicate less activity against normal cells. Purified extracts and fractions can differ in composition and potency, and the full safety and efficacy in humans has not been established[2][3][4][5].
