Camazepam is a benzodiazepine psychoactive drug primarily indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia and anxiety. It is a dimethyl carbamate ester of temazepam, itself a metabolite of diazepam. Camazepam acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the benzodiazepine binding site on the Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABA(A) receptor), enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA in the central nervous system. Compared to other benzodiazepines, it has reduced side effects such as impaired cognition and motor coordination, making it particularly suitable as an anxiolytic. Its anxiolytic properties are more prominent than its anticonvulsant, hypnotic, or muscle relaxant effects. Camazepam is almost completely absorbed after oral administration and is metabolized into active metabolites including temazepam and oxazepam.
