Overview
Cambendazole is a benzimidazole derivative and small molecule anthelmintic primarily used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal worm infections in livestock such as horses, cattle, and sheep. It has also been studied for use in humans, particularly for strongyloidiasis. Cambendazole acts by inhibiting glucose uptake and key metabolic enzymes (fumarate reductase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase) in parasites, leading to energy depletion and paralysis. Additionally, it disrupts microtubule formation by inhibiting tubulin polymerization necessary for cell division in parasites. This results in broad-spectrum activity against nematodes[1][2][3][5][6][8].
