Overview

An experimental biologic nasal spray developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization in collaboration with researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The treatment utilizes colostrum harvested from camels that are seropositive for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The rationale for this modality is based on the high seroprevalence of MERS-CoV in Israeli camels and the potential for cross-reactivity between camel-derived anti-MERS-CoV antibodies and the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The drug was evaluated in an open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 1/2 trial (NCT06857318) for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19. Although the preparation demonstrated the ability to neutralize MERS-CoV in vitro, clinical trial results indicated that the nasal spray did not significantly reduce SARS-CoV-2 viral load or infectivity in patients compared to a placebo.
