Overview

Camel whey protein (CWP) is a bioactive protein fraction derived from camel milk, characterized by its high concentrations of antimicrobial and antioxidant proteins such as lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, and lysozyme. Unlike bovine whey, it lacks beta-lactoglobulin, making it a potentially hypoallergenic alternative. CWP is recognized for its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which are largely mediated through the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway and the suppression of pro-inflammatory cascades involving NF-kappaB and the NLRP3 inflammasome. It has been investigated for various therapeutic applications, including the treatment of periodontitis, recurrent aphthous ulcers, wound healing, and protection against organ toxicity induced by heavy metals, drugs, or heat stress. It is also utilized in the form of enzymatic hydrolysates (peptides) to enhance its bioavailability and specific biological activities.
