Overview

Camlipixant is an investigational oral small molecule drug developed for the treatment of refractory or unexplained chronic cough. It acts as a highly selective and non-competitive antagonist of the P2X3 receptor, a ligand-gated ion channel implicated in cough reflex hypersensitization. By selectively inhibiting P2X3 receptors on sensory neurons in the airways and lungs, camlipixant reduces cough frequency and severity while minimizing taste disturbances (dysgeusia) commonly associated with less selective P2X antagonists. Clinical trials have demonstrated that camlipixant significantly decreases both 24-hour and awake cough frequency in adults with refractory chronic cough who have high baseline coughing rates. The drug is currently being evaluated in phase III clinical trials but has not yet received regulatory approval for any indication[1][3][4][6][7][8].
