Overview

Camphene is a bicyclic monoterpene found as a minor constituent in many essential oils, including turpentine, cypress oil, and citronella oil. It is used primarily as a flavoring agent and fragrance additive in food and cosmetic products[1][3]. Camphene has demonstrated hypolipidemic effects by lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels in animal models of hyperlipidemia; its mechanism appears to be independent of HMG-CoA reductase inhibition (unlike statins), instead involving upregulation of SREBP-1 expression and likely inhibition of microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP)[2][4]. Additionally, camphene exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cardioprotective properties through modulation of oxidative stress pathways[5][6]. It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but has been studied for potential therapeutic roles in cardiovascular disease prevention.
