Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Erkältungs-Balsam (commonly marketed as Klosterfrau Erkältungs-Balsam) is a topical and inhalational over-the-counter herbal combination drug developed by MCM Klosterfrau for the treatment of common cold symptoms, including runny nose, cough, hoarseness, mucus congestion, and bronchial catarrh. The formulation contains three active ingredients: D-camphor, eucalyptus oil, and levomenthol. These components act synergistically as counterirritants, secretolytics, and bronchospasmolytics. Levomenthol and eucalyptus oil (primarily 1,8-cineole) activate the cold-sensitive TRPM8 channels, producing a cooling sensation and relieving nasal congestion. Camphor acts as an agonist on TRPV1 and TRPV3 channels while inhibiting TRPA1, which contributes to its local analgesic and counterirritant effects. Together, these ingredients promote local blood circulation, ease breathing, and help clear mucus from the respiratory tract.
