Campylobacter jejuni strains CG8421 and BH-01-0142 are live bacterial challenge agents used in controlled human infection models (CHIM) to study campylobacteriosis and evaluate the efficacy of candidate vaccines. Developed through a collaboration between the University of Vermont, the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), and ACE BioSciences, these strains are administered orally to healthy volunteers to induce a predictable diarrheal illness. Strain CG8421 was specifically selected for its lack of lipooligosaccharide ganglioside mimicry, a feature intended to eliminate the risk of post-infectious Guillain-Barré syndrome. These strains serve as a standardized inoculum for dose-ranging and vaccine-challenge studies.
