This combination therapy regimen consists of camrelizumab, an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, and apatinib, a selective small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting VEGFR2, administered alongside concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Developed as an investigator-initiated treatment strategy at the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, this regimen is primarily investigated for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who are ineligible for or refuse surgery. Camrelizumab functions as an immune checkpoint inhibitor by blocking the interaction between PD-1 and its ligands, thereby restoring T-cell mediated antitumor responses. Apatinib complements this by inhibiting angiogenesis through the blockade of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2). The addition of these targeted agents to standard cytotoxic chemotherapy and ionizing radiation is intended to enhance local tumor control and improve systemic efficacy in advanced ESCC.
