This combination therapy pairs the anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody camrelizumab with fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) to potentially enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy in patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The rationale is that the gut microbiome significantly influences the host's immune response to checkpoint inhibitors. By modulating the microbiome via FMT from healthy donors or responders, the therapy aims to overcome resistance or augment the anti-tumor activity of camrelizumab. This approach is currently being investigated in investigator-initiated clinical trials to determine if microbiome optimization can improve clinical outcomes in gastrointestinal cancers.
