Camylofin is a small molecule antimuscarinic drug used primarily as an antispasmodic and smooth muscle relaxant. It exerts its effects through a dual mechanism of action: - **Anticholinergic (neurotropic) action**: Camylofin inhibits the binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptors, thereby reducing cholinergic stimulation of smooth muscle, though this effect is less pronounced than other classic antimuscarinics[1][6]. - **Musculotropic (direct smooth muscle) action**: Camylofin directly relaxes smooth muscle by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type IV, leading to increased cyclic AMP and reduced cytosolic calcium levels. This results in effective relief from spasms[1][6][8]. Camylofin is indicated for the treatment of abdominal pain due to intestinal colic, biliary colic, renal colic, dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation), peptic ulcer disease, chronic gastrointestinal spasm disorders, and as an adjunct in obstetrics for cervical dilation during labor[3][5][7][8]. It does not interfere with uterine contractility due to its selectivity for phosphodiesterase IV isoenzyme[6][8]. The drug can be administered orally (tablet or syrup) or via injection (intramuscular or intravenous)[7].
