Camylofin dihydrochloride is a synthetic antispasmodic agent used to alleviate smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal, biliary, and genitourinary tracts. It functions through a dual mechanism of action: acting as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (anticholinergic effect) and exerting a direct papaverine-like relaxant effect on smooth muscle cells. This dual action makes it effective for treating conditions such as intestinal colic, biliary colic, renal colic, and spasmodic dysmenorrhea. It is widely utilized in generic formulations, particularly in the Indian pharmaceutical market, and is often administered orally or via intramuscular injection. The drug was originally developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and is now produced by numerous generic manufacturers.
