canagliflozin

Canagliflozin is a small molecule oral antidiabetic drug classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It lowers blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes by inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidneys, thereby reducing renal glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. This mechanism also leads to mild osmotic diuresis and may lower blood pressure. Canagliflozin is indicated for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attack, stroke, or death) in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and reduction of risk for end-stage kidney disease or worsening kidney function in certain patients with diabetic kidney disease[1][2][5][7]. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.
