Canagliflozin + liraglutide is a combination therapy consisting of two distinct pharmaceutical agents used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Canagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption, thereby increasing urinary glucose excretion. Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that enhances insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon release, and slows gastric emptying in response to elevated blood glucose. The combination has been shown to have additive effects on weight loss and improvements in metabolic parameters such as dyslipidemia and liver fat compared to monotherapy with either agent alone. However, studies indicate no significant additive effect on HbA1c reduction due to complex interactions affecting endogenous glucose production[1][5][7]. This dual therapy targets multiple pathophysiological mechanisms of type 2 diabetes and may also benefit patients with obesity or metabolic syndrome.
