Overview

The combination of canakinumab and ciclosporin is not a single formulated drug product but rather two separate medications that can be used together in certain clinical scenarios. Both drugs have immunosuppressive effects. Canakinumab is a human monoclonal anti-human IL-1β antibody that neutralizes IL-1β inflammatory activity by blocking its interaction with IL-1 receptors. It's marketed under the brand name Ilaris and is used to treat various autoinflammatory conditions including Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS), Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Associated Periodic Syndrome (TRAPS), Hyperimmunoglobulin D Syndrome (HIDS)/Mevalonate Kinase Deficiency (MKD), Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), and Still's disease. Ciclosporin (also spelled cyclosporine) is a calcineurin inhibitor with immunomodulatory properties used to prevent organ transplant rejection and treat various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It's available under brand names including Cequa, Gengraf, Ikervis, Neoral, Restasis, Sandimmune, Verkazia, and Vevye. **Interaction Information:** The combination of canakinumab and ciclosporin presents important clinical considerations: 1. Both drugs increase immunosuppressive effects, which raises the risk of infection. 2. Medical references recommend to "Avoid or Use Alternate Drug" when considering this combination. 3.
