Overview
Candesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 1 year and older, as well as heart failure in adults. It is administered orally as the prodrug candesartan cilexetil, which is rapidly converted to its active form during absorption. Candesartan works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the type 1 angiotensin II receptor (AT1), leading to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, and decreased blood pressure. This mechanism helps lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney problems, and improves survival in heart failure patients. The drug was originally developed by Takeda[4][6][8].
