candicidin

Candicidin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic obtained from the bacterium Streptomyces griseus. It is primarily used for the topical (intravaginal) treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis and is especially effective against Candida albicans. The mechanism of action involves binding irreversibly to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane. This disrupts membrane integrity by altering permeability and causing intracellular ion imbalance, ultimately leading to cell death. Candicidin was named for its high activity against Candida species and has been reported as more effective than amphotericin B in some contexts[1][2][3][4][6].
