Overview

Candida albicans is a species of pathogenic yeast commonly found in the human microbiome, and a frequent cause of fungal infections. In a therapeutic context, preparations of Candida albicans, specifically as an antigen (e.g., CANDIN®), are utilized to modulate the immune system. These antigen preparations are administered to elicit a delayed-type hypersensitivity response, which can be used for diagnostic assessment of cellular immunity or for therapeutic purposes. Clinical trials have investigated its use in treating conditions such as warts and alopecia areata, and as an immune-stimulating component in vaccine therapies for melanoma.
