Overview

CaneCPI-5, or sugarcane cystatin, is a protein that has shown potential in dental health. It protects dental enamel from erosive wear and alters the composition of acquired enamel pellicle and dental biofilm, promoting proteins with antimicrobial and acid-resistance properties. It binds strongly to hydroxyapatite, a key component of teeth, and has been evaluated for its safety on human gingival fibroblasts, demonstrating no cytotoxicity. It is used in preventive dental care products to reduce enamel erosion and abrasion.
