Overview

Canephron is a herbal combination medicine marketed by Austell Pharmaceuticals in South Africa for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the prevention of kidney stone formation. The formulation contains three active herbal ingredients: centaury herb (*Centaurium erythraea*), lovage root (*Levisticum officinale*), and rosemary leaves (*Rosmarinus officinalis*). It operates through a multi-modal mechanism of action, providing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, spasmolytic, and diuretic effects. Specifically, it prevents the adhesion of *E. coli* bacteria to the bladder wall, facilitating their removal from the urinary tract. Canephron is indicated for chronic inflammatory diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, such as cystitis and pyelonephritis, and is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) coated tablet for adults and children from 6 years of age.
