Overview
Canesflor is a vaginal probiotic capsule containing the specific bacterial strain *Lactobacillus plantarum* P17630. It is designed to colonize the vaginal mucosa, restore the natural balance of the vaginal microbiome, and maintain an optimal vaginal pH, thereby preventing the recurrence of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis (thrush). In addition to its commercial availability as an over-the-counter product, Canesflor is being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial sponsored by the University of Western Australia as part of a combination 'screen-and-treat' regimen (alongside azithromycin and vaginal clindamycin) to prevent spontaneous preterm birth in asymptomatic pregnant women with vaginal dysbiosis.
