Overview

Cang-ai Volatile Oil (CAVO) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) aromatic preparation developed by researchers including Dongdong Qin at the Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine for the treatment of depression. It is a complex mixture of volatile oils extracted from ten Chinese aromatic herbs, including *Atractylodes lancea*, *Agastache rugosa*, and *Syzygium aromaticum*. The preparation is administered via inhalation and contains active compounds such as eugenol, 1,8-cineole, and patchouli alcohol. CAVO's antidepressant mechanism involves the regulation of dopamine and serotonin metabolism, modulation of the indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO)-mediated tryptophan degradation pathway, and inhibition of neuroinflammation by suppressing microglia activation. It is currently being evaluated in clinical studies using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess changes in cortical excitability and brain functional connectivity.
