Canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cAT-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from canine adipose tissue, characterized by their ability to differentiate into multiple lineages and their potent immunomodulatory properties. In the context of veterinary oncology, cAT-MSCs are investigated as cellular delivery vehicles due to their innate tropism for tumor microenvironments, a phenomenon driven by their response to inflammatory signals and chemokines secreted by tumors. These cells can be genetically modified to express therapeutic agents, such as interferon-beta (IFN-β), which allows for the localized delivery of high concentrations of anti-tumor molecules directly to the tumor site. This approach aims to enhance therapeutic efficacy while minimizing the systemic toxicity often associated with conventional treatments like chemotherapy. Research has demonstrated that cAT-MSCs, particularly when used in combination with low-dose chemotherapy, can significantly inhibit tumor growth and induce apoptosis in canine melanoma models.
