Overview

Canine parvovirus monoclonal antibody is a monoclonal antibody therapy conditionally approved for the treatment and prevention of canine parvovirus (parvo) in dogs. It is a synthetic antibody designed to bind to and neutralize canine parvovirus, preventing the virus from entering and destroying intestinal and immune cells. Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease, and prior to this product's approval supportive care was the only available treatment. The drug is indicated both for treatment of active parvovirus infection and, more recently, for passive immunization to prevent disease in exposed puppies. It is administered as a single intravenous injection for treatment and as a lower subcutaneous dose for passive immunity. Clinical studies show that it prevents mortality and reduces the severity and duration of clinical signs when given early in infection, and it can shorten hospitalization. Common side effects are mild and primarily injection-site reactions or mild gastrointestinal effects, with rare instances of hypersensitivity. This agent represents the first conditionally approved, targeted antiviral therapy for parvovirus in dogs.
